What linguasphere.info is, who runs it and what it does not claim to be.

linguasphere.info is an independent reference site about the languages of the world. It publishes the classification of the Linguasphere Register of the World’s Languages and Speech Communities in a browsable form, and adds its own plain-language guides around it.

What we are not

We are not the Observatoire linguistique, the Linguasphere Observatory or the Linguasphere Foundation, and we do not speak for them or for any successor body. The similarity of the name comes from the domain, not from any connection. We do not issue linguascale codes, we do not maintain the Register, and we cannot register a language on anyone’s behalf.

What we do

• Make the published Register navigable: every zone opens into the entries below it, with no plugins and no scripts.
• Turn the Register’s own country data into 229 country pages.
• Index every named entry alphabetically.
• Write guides that explain the classification in ordinary words.

Corrections

If an entry here misrepresents the published Register, or a country placement is wrong, write to us and we will correct it or say plainly why we have not. See contact.
