Editorial policy

How material gets onto this site, and how paid placements are marked.

Register data

Classification codes, entry names and the descriptive notes attached to them are reproduced from the published Linguasphere Register. We do not edit them to taste. Where the Register is uncertain or records a disputed grouping, its own wording says so, and we keep that wording.

Derived numbers

Counts on this site — entries below a zone, countries attached to an entry — are computed from the Register data itself, not estimated. If a number looks wrong, it is a bug in our reading of the source, and we want to hear about it.

Our own guides

Guides are written for this site and signed by it. They explain; they do not sell. Where a guide relies on an outside source, it links to that source.

Sponsored placements

Some articles on this domain were supplied and paid for by third parties, including material on subjects unrelated to linguistics. They are kept as published, are marked Sponsored placement at the top of the page, and are collected in the archive. They are not written by this site and do not reflect its views. Outbound links in them carry nofollow.

What we will not do

• Present a sponsored article as editorial work.
• Claim any authority over the Register that we do not have.
